What’s a Personal Fall Arrest System?

If you or another worker plans to perform a task while standing at least six feet above the ground, stay secure and reduce injury risks with a personal fall arrest system. Personal fall arrest systems consist of the following components at a minimum:

  • A full-body harness: This component goes around your shoulders, legs, and midsection to keep you suspended upright in the event of a slip, trip, or fall. The design distributes the force of a fall across your body, rather than to a single location. Workers are also less likely to slip out of a harness during these incidents
  • A connector: A basic fall arrest system keeps you anchored to a secure, sturdy point. A lanyard and retractable lifeline connect your harness to this object or anchor. In addition, these components intentionally restrict where you can travel, ultimately holding you back from potential hazards. Connectors attach to the harness via D-rings, locking hooks or carabiners, or buckles and need to be sized in relation to fall distance
  • Anchorage point: An anchor point is the last but perhaps most crucial component of a fall protection kit. Anchors provide stability and a connection point for the lanyard and retractable lifeline. Ideally, the anchor is a fixed object sturdy enough to absorb the load associated with a potential fall. However, a point may need to be created based on location or application
