Bump Cap Hard Hat and Baseball Cap Inserts

If you’re exposed to pipes and overhead objects in your workplace, you need a level of protection against these concerns. Bump caps help reduce injury rates in manufacturing, industrial, and similar settings. As you think about your safety, lower risks for bumps, scratches, scalp lacerations, and more. At Magid®, we have solutions from Ergodyne®, MPS Centurion®, and other brands.

What is a Bump Cap?

Not to be confused with a hard hat, a bump cap is constructed of impact-resistant plastic, has a low-profile design, and includes some padding. Wearing one provides a degree of protection to the top of the head against worker-generated impact or bumping your head against an object.

Along with this essential function, bump caps:

  • Offer some impact and puncture resistance
  • Are typically outfitted with venting to manage heat
  • Include padded foam on the interior for comfort
  • Have various brim lengths, including baseball styles
  • Can be worn as a separate piece of head gear or an insert into a baseball or similar cap

Bump Cap vs. Hard Hat

Bump caps suit conditions where workers have elevated risks for lacerations, bumps, abrasions, and similar injuries to the head area. However, as they don’t provide side and lateral protection, they should not be worn in settings where ANSI-compliant hard hats are required.

Adding to this difference, no U.S. standard governs the design and protection provided by bump caps. As such, they’re not sufficient for areas with falling objects where workers may experience a slip, trip, or fall injury, or when electrical hazard protection is needed.

Instead, bump caps are designed for areas and industries with where workers’ heads may contact stationary objects, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Warehouses
  • Transportation
  • Working in confined spaces, including under sinks, around plumbing, or in crawl spaces
  • Automotive
  • Aviation
  • Food processing
