If your job requires ANSI-compliant head protection, a hard hat with an intact suspension system is a must for staying safe and reducing your risk of suffering a head or neck injury on the job. But when hard hat suspension systems start to show signs of wear, this impacts their effectiveness and decreases the protection of your hard hat or safety cap. If you’re looking for a replacement, shop selections from MSA and Honeywell in addition to other solutions at Magid.
If your job necessitates a hard hat, it’s expected to comply with ANSI Z89.1 standards, which specify the inclusion of a suspension system. Hard hat suspensions help absorb and deflect impact forces from the top of your head (as well as the sides if your workers wear a Type II hard hat) and transfer the force away to reduce shock to the head, neck, and spine. A hard hat suspension system is embedded inside the hard hat shell at four or six attachment points and creates distance between your head and the hard hat’s shell.
Most hard hat suspension systems are made with headbands, brow pads, and straps with a locking mechanism like a ratchet or pin-lock system to tighten or loosen the fit (depending on the size of the worker’s head). Additionally, the suspension system helps hard hats remain securely in place rather than shift or move around. If one of your workers wears their hard hat shell backwards, their suspension system should still be worn normally where the locking mechanism rests on the back of their head.
Once the hard hat suspension appears stretched out or damaged, it’s time to seek out a replacement to maintain jobsite-appropriate protection that complies with ANSI standards. The hard hat suspension should also be replaced if cuts, frays, chemical damage, or any other signs of wear are found on the straps, brow pad, and head band.
As mentioned earlier, suspensions include two basic types based on the number of points secured to the inside of the hard hat. A four-point suspension attaches at four points, and a six-point adds two additional touch points.
Hard hat suspensions adjust with either a ratchet knob that you turn to loosen and tighten the fit or with a pinlock design sometimes called a squeeze-lock or snap-lock system. Ratchet suspensions provide a closer, tighter fit, while pinlock options are said to be easier to adjust, especially when worn by those with longer hair.
Cap-style suspension systems offer a lighter feel, while a full-brim suspension increases the degree of coverage.
