Welding Helmets
When exposed to heat, flames and flying sparks, you need the ultimate protection to keep your face and skin safe from burns. Magid offers a wide selection of welding helmets and welding helmet accessories, from ultra-light helmets to inside protection plates. Our welding helmets feature auto darkening filters for increased performance, and advanced designs that improve overall comfort.

Welding Helmets, Masks, and Hoods

As a welder, you routinely encounter heat, flames, sparks, and splatter. Personal protective equipment (PPE), like welding helmets, masks, and hoods, shields you from these exposures, so that you can safely and comfortably do your job.

Whether you’re new to the field or upgrading your welding hood, mask, or helmet, explore solutions from 3M™, Jackson Safety, Sellstrom, and more brands available at Magid®.

The Importance of Welding Helmets, Masks, and Hoods

Welders require full-body protection to reduce exposure to extreme heat, flames, debris, and ultraviolet and infrared radiation. PPE takes these factors into account: ANSI-compliant welding masks, helmets, and hoods protect the face area alone or in conjunction with a pair of safety glasses or goggles. A welding helmet fan, meanwhile, keeps the wearer cool while reducing heat buildup.

As conditions vary, so do the features and types of welding helmets. Common varieties include:

  • Passive welding helmets have a tinted lens that lets the user look through. This lighter-weight option may need to be lifted on occasion and doesn’t accommodate variable conditions
  • Variable shade welding helmets let the wearer manually adjust the tint of the lens from #5 to #13 and provide some adjustability for changing conditions
  • Auto-darkening welding helmets are the professional standard, as they quickly adapt to the environment and application and provide sufficient protection for those using plasma cutting machines. As another benefit, automatically switching to a lighter tint means the wearer can keep their welding mask on as they check the quality of their work

Welding Hoods Versus Welding Helmets

Many use these two terms interchangeably. However, they apply to two different types of welding PPE:

  • Welding hoods provide a baseline of coverage and often describe a more passive type of mask without any variability
  • Welding helmets deliver more adjustable, specialized protection. In addition to a variable or auto-darkening lens, these helmets shield the wearer against heat, radiation exposure, debris, gases, and even flashes
