Nitrile and Latex Disposable Gloves – Industrial and Medical

Nurses, doctors, technicians, and researchers can encounter bodily fluids and harmful microbes in medical environments. Food processing workers need gloves that won’t spread bacteria or other substances on food and packable products. For chemical storage, handling, or testing, workers need protection against potential exposures.

For these applications and industries (and many more), disposable work gloves can provide a protective barrier to reduce the risk of injury, illness, and contamination.

Nitrile Vs. Latex

Two of the most common materials disposable gloves are made from are latex and nitrile. Latex is made from rubber, while nitrile is a synthetic rubber compound. Latex gloves and thinner materials are commonly used for tasks that require tactile sensitivity and greater flexibility. Nitrile gloves are 3-5 times more puncture resistant than latex and won’t cause an allergic reaction for those allergic to latex. They can also provide chemical resistance for acids, oils, or bodily fluids.

Both deliver a significant degree of flexibility, giving you a great combination of dexterity and protection. They can also be designed with cuff lengths that accommodate different applications. For example, longer gloves are suited for potential blood, bodily fluid, or pathogen exposure.

Industrial vs. Medical Gloves

Latex and nitrile disposable gloves are categorized for use in industrial and medical applications due to requirements for tasks in each category.

  • Industrial: Accommodating applications from automotive use to food service to chemical handling, industrial gloves deliver chemical resistance but don’t meet FDA requirements for healthcare use
  • Medical: Sometimes called surgical or exam gloves, medical gloves create a barrier against bloodborne pathogen exposure and are powder-free for use during surgeries and medical exams

Vinyl Gloves

Also referred to as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl gloves give you tactile sensitivity in a comfortable, dexterous shell. They are recommended for general purpose use (such as food processing and service) and can be a viable alternative for those who have latex allergies, as well. Magid offers both powder free and lightly powdered vinyl gloves for a dry hand feel.

Polyethylene Gloves

Different polyethylene disposable gloves can be used for single-use applications (such as food handling) or in janitorial or maintenance applications for clean-up tasks. Thicker polyethylene offers more protection against cuts and snags, while some come with a smooth finish to give you a better grip.

Finger Cots

For environments that don’t require full glove protection or where you need protection for your fingers from static, finger cots are often made with natural rubber latex to reduce product contamination. Magid offers both powder free cots for contamination prevention and low-powdered versions for easy donning and doffing.
